[图片]To prove your proficiency in English when going to an English-speaking country for study, work, or immigration you need to sit for an English Proficiency test. The type of test you will take depends on your institution. For example, some universities prefer IELTS, whereas others TOEFL. These tests are not very easy. Even if you are good in English you need to take extensive preparation to do well in these exams. Some of the ways to prepare for the exam include reading books, enrolling in a course, reading blogs, practicing reading and listening, building vocabulary, doing past papers, etc. Among these solving sample exam papers seems to be the most effective method of preparation.

Benefits of doing past papers

By solving the past papers you get familiar with the exam format. You know how many questions are expected in each section and the time within which you need to solve them. You will understand the difficulty level of the questions. You will learn a lot of new words by doing these papers. It is a short-cut approach to learning grammar rather than reading the entire grammar book. When you start solving the questions and matching the answers you will automatically find your mistakes and learn from them. You can find out whether you can complete the test on time by giving these tests using a stopwatch. You will understand which part of the exam you have to catch up on. The past papers contain the marks allocated for each section. That way you will understand which question weighs more marks and so you can focus on those questions first. Doing past papers is a good way to practice writing. You will get a huge collection of topics to write about that appeared in real exams. So, you will get an idea about the type of topics that come in the exam. The more you practice writing, the better you will become stronger in grammar and vocabulary. You can buy books consisting of past question papers and answers. These are available online as well. They come with an analysis of the answers. So, these past papers act as your guide showing you what mistakes you have made and how you can approach to the right answer. By solving the past papers you will get an idea about your areas of strength and weaknesses. You can then focus on areas where you need major improvements. Some online resources let you take computerized practice exams. In these exams you don't have to check your answers, the computer will do it for you. Most of these tests are paid. They will even score your exam and give you an idea about your expected score in the real exam. The more you do the past papers, the more your skill will develop. You will be able to recall what you have learned from books, courses, or online resources. These past question papers are a wonderful tool for revision. Days before the exam you must solve these question papers to get into the mood of giving the actual exam. It also makes a positive psychological impact as you become confident with practice. If you have any knowledge gap then solving the past papers will bring you back on track. You will notice that you are facing problems with some particular types of paper. This is an indication of your problem area. After identifying your weakness you can act on it. You will gain lots of confidence from solving past papers. This will help you to answer questions well and reduce the chances of mistakes. Just like the other aspects of life, in taking English Proficiency exams also, there is nothing better than practicing. By doing the past papers, you will become good in every section. [图片]

Strategies for Solving English Practice Test

Answering all the questions within the designated time is a big challenge for these tests. You should answer the questions of the practice test within the allocated time. You need to develop a sense of timing so that you don't spend too much time on one question. Learn to prioritize the sections depending on your strengths and weaknesses, the mark, and the time allocated for each. Many of these tests are lengthy. You must also learn how to stay focused for such a long time. To solve problems related to reading and listening you should read the text and listen to audio recordings. When reading the text you should note down the important information and create a mental outline of the text. When practicing listening exercises, note down the keywords and phrases so that you can recall the information when answering the questions. Even after practicing so much, you may get a poor score. You must remember that you will lose marks for misunderstanding the question and answering wrongly. You must make it a habit to analyze the practice question paper thoroughly after giving the practice test. This way you can exactly find out your mistakes. When you are practicing the writing section, you must learn how to structure your essay. You must have an introduction, body, and conclusion. Use the speaking prompts mentioned in the practice questions and record your answers. Then listen to your pronunciation and speech delivery technique. Find out areas of improvement and work on them.

[图片]Those who want to study abroad, do the job, or apply for immigration must take an English Proficiency test to demonstrate their English skills. They have to get a minimum test score to reach their goal. The minimum score required by the institutions can vary. Some institutions want you to score a minimum in each section. So, candidates often have to take these tests multiple times to obtain the desired score. Sometimes it can be frustrating when you get the overall minimum score but cannot achieve the individual section minimum score. In such cases, you have to work harder on the section that you are struggling with. All the English Proficiency tests examine your capability to express yourself in English by testing you in the Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking sections. These tests are assessed using graded scales depending on an agreed standard. Knowing how your English skill is graded will help you to prepare well for the exam.

IELTS score calculation

In the IELTS exam, different scores are allocated for every section. The scores are marked between 0 and 9; with 9 being the most achievable score. You can get fractional scores like 5.5. However, if the score falls outside the 0.5 range then it's rounded up to the whole number; that is, if you get 5.65, it will be converted to 6.0. The listening score is given based on your answers to 40 questions. If you answer 39 of the 40 questions correctly then you will get the full score of 9. If you answer 18 to 22 questions correctly then you will get an average 50% score. Many universities will accept an overall IELTS score of 5.5. However, some universities demand a minimum writing score of 6.0. So, even if you get a 7.5 score overall unless you get 6.0 in your writing section, those universities won't accept you. In the reading section, if you get all the 40 questions correct then you will get a score of 9. The writing and the speaking sections will also have the highest 9 bands. You will be marked by focusing on your vocabulary, grammar, and fluency. You will get the overall score after adding all the individual scores and taking the average.

Duolingo score calculation

This test uses a different scoring scale. It has these scoring categories: • 10-55 indicates that the candidate has poor/basic understanding and comprehension. • 60-85 indicates that the candidate has basic/fair understanding and comprehension, but with challenges. • 90-115 indicates that the person has good understanding, speaking, and communication. • 120-160 is the score that tells the person has excellent understanding and comprehension. You should know that a Duolingo test score of 85 to 90 is equivalent to a 5.5 score in IELTS.

TOEFL iBT score calculation

Each of the sections of TOEFL is graded out of 30 marks each; so your total evaluation will be out of 120. Every section has a banded scoring structure; there are four categories for reading and listening and five for speaking and writing. For listening and reading, the following categories are present: • Advanced (24-30) • High-Intermediate (18-23) • Low-Intermediate (4-17) • Below Low-Intermediate (0-3) For speaking the bands the categories are: • Advanced (25-30) • High-Intermediate (17-21) • Low-Intermediate (16-19) • Basic (10-15) • Below Basic (0-9) The writing score categories are: • Advanced (24-30) • High-Intermediate (17-23) • Low-Intermediate (13-16) • Basic (7-12) • Below Basic (0-6) Most universities expect prospective students to have a minimum TOEFL score of 90 to get an admit. TOEIC

This test assesses your communication skills in the workplace. You can obtain a total score of 990. The score remains valid for two years.

PTE scoring criteria

[图片]Answering questions in English proficiency tests is the only challenge that the students face. Managing time seems to be the most concerning aspect of these tests. These English tests have time limitations for every section. So, you need to learn how to answer the questions within the given time frame. Some of these tests are computerized. So, the screen will just go away once your time is up for a particular section. So, the examiners not only see how good you are in English but also judge how you perform under pressure. So, learning how to manage time effectively is very important. Most of the English Proficiency tests have the same structure: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The timing for each section is also similar. Here we will learn about some time management strategies.

Listening test

In this test, the candidates have to listen to audio recordings and understand the conversation or talk. Then they have to answer the questions within a short time. To quickly answer the questions you must listen effectively. Also, efficient note-taking is necessary. One trick is to read the questions and answer options ( in the case of MCQs) before the audio recordings are played. That way you will know what to anticipate. The chance is that you will know the answer quickly. You need to know how to grasp the main points quickly. When writing notes, don't write the entire sentence or word. Use abbreviations and symbols whenever you can. You will be reading this later, so just make sure you understand what you are writing.

Reading test

In the reading test, the examiner will test your ability to understand written texts. You won't get the time to read the entire text word-by-word. You must skim through the lines and note down the main points. A good strategy is to read the first paragraph to get an idea about the passage. Then read the first lines of each paragraph to find out what the paragraph is about. Usually, in a reading passage, each paragraph explains one point. Note down the keywords in each paragraph. Then read the conclusion. Go to the questions. Whenever you come across keywords that appear in one of the paragraphs, read that paragraph in detail to find the answer to the question. If you can locate the answer quickly, you can save a lot of time.

Writing test

In the writing test, the candidates have to express their thoughts in writing using various words. Planning is important in writing as you need to connect the ideas properly so they sound good together. Develop phrases and sentences that take less time. Keep enough time for revision and proofreading. [图片]

Speaking test

This section of the test examines the candidates' ability to talk in English and express their thoughts in an organized manner. Before starting to speak about a topic, take a few seconds to arrange your thoughts. You shouldn't speak too fast or too slow. Pick up the right pace and avoid saying blank words like 'um' or 'uh'. It wastes time and shows that you are not a fluent English speaker.

General time management tips

Do timed practice tests You must do lots of practice tests to get familiar with the question patterns. Make sure that you practice them in timed conditions. Have a stopwatch ready and see how you perform. If you can't complete a particular section on time, then focus on that section and try to answer questions quickly. Practice speaking In the English proficiency tests, you will have a speaking section. Practice your speaking lessons with a friend so that you can get feedback about your performance. The other person can tell you where you are losing time and you need to quicken up. You should spend more time explaining the important points. So, making a quick plan before speaking is very crucial. It is normal for the candidates to get nervous in the exam hall due to the time pressure. To reduce your anxiety you can do deep breathing exercises. If you can feel relaxed then you will be able to manage time more efficiently. You should visualize yourself that you are managing the time properly. This will prevent you from panicking. Allocate the time proportionately in each section. Divide your time depending on the number of questions and the difficulty level. You should prioritize questions according to the marks they carry. If you are unsure of the answer, don't spend too much time on it. Just move on to the next one. Many people will advise you to skip a question if you are unsure of the answer and then come back later. But with such a tight schedule it seems to be impossible to get the time to come back and attend the question. In such a case, it is better to attempt the question anyway and move forward. If the test you are giving doesn't have any negative marking, then your score won't be affected. You must arrive at the exam hall early so that you get the time to sit at your desk properly and start writing in the best condition. Try to sleep early the night before so that you are in the best health condition the next day. There is nothing more effective than practicing questions with time before the exam. You will notice that often you are unable to complete the questions. So, you must find out what is slowing you down and work to improve that condition. When writing, if it's taking time to think of a complex word, then write a simple word instead, for example. With the right techniques, you can complete the English proficiency exam on time.

[图片]Even the most linguistically strong person will complain to you about his or her struggle with English vocabulary. You can never learn enough of English words. There are so many new words out there that it's quite impossible to remember most of them. Each word has several synonyms, antonyms, and different forms of parts of speech, thus making the list of words longer. Most of us realize our limitation of vocabulary when we prepare for English testing exams like TOEFL or IELTS. But the time seems to be too short to learn so many new words. In my GRE, for example, I've come across words in the questions whose meaning was unfamiliar to me and also the answer words that looked strange too. Though it is impossible to learn so many new words before the exam, you should use certain techniques to remember them vaguely. Here are some vocabulary-building tips that can help you.

Write down the new words

Just reading the new words aloud won't help you to remember the words. You need to write them down. Besides the word, you can write a sentence involving that word, or draw a picture. This will improve your information-retaining capability.

Revise the vocabulary

If you have decided to learn 10 words a day, for example, then you should not forget to revise the previous ones. You should go back to revising those words as well. Revising the words regularly will help you to recall those words easily.

You should spend time surrounded by English. So, find a book from your home library and start reading it. Here also use a note to write down the difficult words. You should look up in the dictionary or search online for the meaning of the word. When you do practice tests, the context is displayed before showing the questions. The texts are arranged after a lot of thought by the examiners. So, you can learn new words by rearing those extract. Also, you can learn new information about the world or society. Reading is a very powerful tool for improving vocabulary. So, read different types of books and articles so that you come across varieties of new words.

Use flashcards

It's a very common yet effective technique to learn new words. Get some square-shaped small cards and write down the new word on one side and the meaning on the other side. Put all the cards in a small bag. Whenever you go carry the cards with you. Take out the cards and try to remember their meanings. If you can't recall the meanings right away, turn around the card to look at the meaning. Arrange the flashcards according to different themes. For example, make a group of flashcards for words related to sports and then another related to business.

Have an immersive English experience

You should surround yourself with English, meaning do everything that involves English like watch movies, read newspapers, help your younger brother with story reading, speak to a native English-speaking friend, read a blog, and other things.

Listen to an English radio program

You should listen to the radio where they play English songs or have talk shows in English. Listening to these English content will help you learn new words too.

Play word games

You will find many word games online that will help you to learn new words. Do some research to find out some free online games to help you develop your vocabulary. The classic 'Scrabble' is a wonderful game to learn new words.

Apps

You can download various word-learning apps on your smartphone. These apps have interesting ways of teaching you new words. There will be exercises, games, and tests to help you improve your vocabulary. [图片]

Join communities

You can join social media groups or forums focused on English vocabulary learning. You can discuss with others regarding the meaning and usage of new words. You can have a conversation surrounding those words to help you retain the new information in your memory.

Contextual learning

A single word can be used differently in sentences giving them a different meaning. So, only memorizing the meaning of a word is not enough. You should be able to use them properly in sentences. You must remember doing 'make sentences' with new words in your literature class when you were young. The purpose of giving you such an assignment was to help you apply the word in a sentence properly besides knowing its meaning. You should maintain a vocabulary journal to keep track of the words you have learned along with their meanings. Try writing a paragraph or an article using the new words that you have learned. You can even use them in composing emails or social media posts.

Repeat and review

Using the new words repeatedly in your writing will move those words from your short-term memory to the long-term one. So, you will never forget those words. Apart from reading stories and articles, you should read idioms, synonyms, and antonyms. Using words in different forms will help to improve your English. If your vocabulary is strong then you will be able to answer many questions in the English tests. When you talk to your friends or family members, try to use the new words you have learned. Teach them those words. That way you will remember the words well. Vocabulary is a major section of all English Language exams. So, whether you take TOEFL or IELTS, you cannot avoid learning new words. So, use these tips and techniques to build up your vocabulary.

You should know the syllabus, type of questions, and levels of difficulty of the exam. Once you know all these you can identify your strengths and weaknesses. For example, if many of the words you see unfamiliar then you know that you have to work on your vocabulary.

Take sample test

To find out where your skills lie, it is important to take a sample test. By attending exam-type questions you will know how much you have to work hard to achieve your goal. You will know which areas to focus on.

Know the types of questions

The exam is full of a variety of questions. Some of the questions of the Duolingo English test are very different from those of TOEFL or IELTS. For example, one type of question is to choose between real and fake words. The question can be in text or audio form. Another type of question is to type the missing letters of the word within a text. In the listening section, you will be asked to listen to a sentence and repeat it. You will need to do an image description, reading, and a writing task as well.

Know about Computer Adaptive Test (CAT)

You must be familiar with CAT before the exam. In this format of exam, you will be faced with a more challenging question once you answer a question correctly. On the other hand, if your answer is wrong, then the next one will be easier. So, you can guess whether the answers to your previous questions were correct or not by looking at the next question. So, if you see that your test is getting difficult then you will know that you are doing good in the exam. [图片]

Practice speaking

To do well in the speaking section of the exam, you must practice a lot. Try speaking on any random topic for a few minutes; record it; and hear it. You will be able to find mistakes in the content, speaking style, word choice, punctuation, and other things. So, work on those aspects of speaking to get a high score. Instead of practicing alone, it is more effective to call in a friend to help you.

Incorporate passive learning

Active learning is not enough to score well on this test. You need to include passive learning too. You must do activities that will help you to improve your spoken and written English. For example, you can watch Hollywood movies, read novels, or listen to podcasts. Now you can listen to audiobooks as well. You can also listen to English songs to understand the lyrics. To improve writing skills through passive learning, you can start writing a blog or articles on various topics.

Use the app

You can download the Duolingo app on your smartphone to practice English when you are on the go. With this app, you can practice at your own pace.

Learn new words

There is no alternative to learning new words every day. Your vocabulary must be strong to get a good overall score on the test.

Last minute preparation

The day before the test you must get good sleep and rest. You should organize all the necessary things, like your ID. You can take this test anytime from anywhere. So, if you decide to give it at home, make sure your computer or laptop is working. You must ensure a good Wi-Fi connection as well. On the day of the test, tell everyone in your family about the test. You must inform them of the time so they realize that they can't disturb you during that time. Keep your phone away and in silent mode. During the exam, your face and ears must be visible at all times. So, don't put on a headphone; otherwise, you will be disqualified. Before starting the test read all the instructions carefully. Stay focused during the duration of the test. Unlike TOEFL and IELTS, the Duolingo English test has only one section. The questions are also adaptive; that is, depending on your answer to the previous question, a new question will appear on the screen. If you can answer a question correctly then the next question will be more difficult. The test is invigilated online, so you must look at the screen all the time. The test is timed, so you need to answer the questions quickly. After the graded test, you must participate in an ungraded video interview and also submit a writing sample. Though these are not grades, the testing authority will send them to the universities you apply to along with the grades so that they can judge your English proficiency well. To improve your writing skills, write blogs or express your thoughts on platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn. Writing without apprehension is essential to boost your confidence and improve your writing skills. By practicing enough, you are sure to learn better words and ways to write. There are lots of online resources that can help you prepare for the exam. You should sit for the exam confidently. If your preparation is well, nothing will prevent you from getting a good score. You will eventually get admission to your chosen university with the Duolingo English test score.

[图片]PTE Academic exam tests your academic level in English in four sections: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. This test is intended for students who what to study abroad and also for those who want to apply for a migration visa in Australia or New Zealand. It is also recognized by the U.S. state Boards for Nursing work visa. The speaking and writing sections of this exam are done together.

Tips for improving listening skills

To improve listening skills you must set a daily target to listen to authentic English every day. The more you listen, the better your score will be. Here are some tips: • Don't choose something too difficult to listen to that you will not understand. Start at your comfortable level and slowly move towards the more difficult ones. • Listen repeatedly to fully understand the content, and remember the vocabulary and pronunciation. • You can use an online Tone Generator tool to slow down the recordings keeping the original pitch of the speaker. • You should listen to different speakers having various accents. Try listening to speakers from the US, Canada, Australia, Britain, and New Zealand. You must also listen to speakers from non-English countries like India and China. • Listen to popular podcasts like 'Luke's English', 'Better at English', 'Culips Chatterbox', and others. • Maintain a listening diary to take notes on the recordings. You will come across difficult words and can find the meaning later on. Use symbols and abbreviations to take notes quickly. Your notes should be able to tell you about the main topic of discussion, the type of accent the speaker is using, unknown vocabulary, etc. • Before starting the listening section, look at the questions first to know what to expect after listening to the audio clips. If you read the questions first, you can anticipate what you have to listen to. Try to avoid distractions when answering the questions.

Tips for improving speaking

In this section, you will need to demonstrate your capability to speak fluent English. Here are the types of questions you will encounter: • Give a personal introduction. • A text will appear on the screen which you have to read aloud. • After listening to the recording of a sentence, you will have to repeat it. • Describe an image that appears on the screen in detail. • Listen to a lecture and re-tell. • Answer short questions. • Summarize Spoken Text • Essay [图片]You need to develop your confidence before the PTE speaking exam. Here are some tips for you. • Listen actively: Listen to conversations of different types. Write down repeated words, keywords, or difficult words. You can practice listening to podcasts or radio. • In the 'summarize spoken text' section you will listen to the recording only once. So, note down the important keywords that can guide you when summarizing the text. You must speak with a constant flow. Emphasize the keywords and elaborate on them. • You should practice speaking at the right pace; not too fast or not too slow. • In the personal introduction section, you get the opportunity to tell about yourself. Take 25 seconds to prepare what you are about to say. • When introducing yourself tell your name and background (personal, academic, and professional). You should take only 30 seconds to talk about yourself. • Speak in a formal tone with proper pronunciation. • Avoid lengthy sentences. • Speak in a tone that shows that you are confident. • Make sure that the microphone is working properly so that your speech is recorded in the best condition. • In the 'read aloud' part of the test if you make a mistake, don't stop; continue speaking. • Practice tongue twisters to improve your speaking. • To answer the 'repeat section' question try to focus on the keywords. If you can't remember the whole sentence at least talk about the keywords. Try to understand the meaning of the sentence. • Watch pronunciation videos on YouTube to get fluent in speaking. • You must remember that your speaking score depends a lot on correct punctuation and oral fluency. • Avoid irrelevant words. • Pause at points according to punctuation when you are asked to read a text aloud. • In the 'describe image' section, you will get 25 seconds to analyze an image. Right after the image is taken away from the screen, start speaking. Talk about the title of the image first and then describe the various aspects of the image. • Get a partner to practice speaking. You should try every type of question in the speaking section. You need to buy some books to prepare for the listening and speaking tests. You can see videos on the speaking test to learn how to speak to answer each of the test questions. In the listening section, grasping the accent of the speaker can be difficult. You can watch movies to get familiar with the various accents. Listen to audio clips that you will find on many PTE preparation websites. Alternatively, you can join a course too to practice and improve your English skills. Once you score well in the listening and speaking sections of the test, you can expect an overall good score. It's not easy to score high in these sections, but with lots of practice, you can achieve your desired marks.

[图片]The Cambridge exams include FCE (First Certificate in English), CAE(Certificate in Advanced English), and CPE (Certificate in Proficiency of English). With so many options it can be confusing to decide which exam to take.

The Cambridge English exams

Unlike the TOEFL, IELTS, or TOEIC exams, the FCE, CAE, and CPE are English-specific exams. The vocabulary and grammatical structure in each of these exams are different. The FCE or B2 exam is the upper-intermediate level, the CAE advanced level, and CPE or C2 is the proficiency level exam. You need to get a passing score of at least 60% in these exams. All these exams are accepted by universities, companies, and governments. All these tests demonstrate the proficiency of English of non-native speakers. You should take the FCE exam if you have advanced-level English skills. CAE and CPE are trickier exams. You must assess your current level of English before deciding which exam to take. You can get your English level tested at a language academy. They can take a certain test to find out how good you are in English. The FCE test has two versions: 'for schools' and 'for adult students'. Both the tests have the same format except that the topics are different. The CAE test is appropriate for study, work, or immigration purposes. This test indicates that the person's English level is suitable for academic and professional life. The CPE test is a difficult exam and tests the highest English skill level. The passing score of this exam shows that the candidate can speak English fluently using native-speaker expressions. The prestigious and top educational institutions accept this test.

Tenses play an important part in the writing and speaking sections. But you have to also learn how to structure the argument and content. You should be able to use proper phrases and demonstrate your vocabulary skills. You must spend time revising verb patterns, relative clauses, linking words, noun phrases, and others. You will find various grammar books in the market. It is better to rely on multiple grammar books for exam preparation. If self-study isn't your thing, then you can join courses to get a better score on these exams. You should practice questions as much as you can to learn all the grammar techniques. Practicing will also tell you where you are making mistakes. Though the grammar topics of all the exams are similar, you must remember that the higher-level exams CAE and CPE have questions that are harder than those in FCE. So, you must prepare accordingly for the exam.

Testing
[图片]TOEIC is an English proficiency test for non-native speakers to find out whether they can communicate well in English independently in a foreign country. While TOEFL and IELTS tests are aimed at students who want to do further studies in an English-speaking country, TOEIC is for business and employment. So, if you want to work or do business abroad, then you should take the TOEIC test. It has listening, reading, writing, and speaking sections. Though the test is quite easy, the test takers make some common mistakes that affect their test results. Here we will discuss these mistakes and learn how to avoid them.

Not being familiar with the test format

When preparing for the test, the first thing you should do is look at the format and register it in your head permanently. The test has two sections: Reading and listening. The question types of each section are different. If you are not familiar with the format before the test, you will waste a lot of time during the exam figuring out the solution to a question. To avoid this mistake you must do lots of practice tests. That way you will know what to expect at the test. The listening section has four parts: conversations, talks, photographs, and question-response.

Not giving importance to time management

You must remember that it is a time-based exam. You will get limited time to complete all your questions. The candidates often don't manage time properly during the exam and so end up not completing the questions. The worst part of this is that they often leave out questions whose answers they know. To avoid such mistakes you must do timed practice tests. Have a stopwatch ready and see how long it takes you to answer the questions. Remember that the Reading section has 100 questions which you must complete in 75 minutes. The listening section also has 100 questions which you must complete in 45 minutes. Practice completing each section within the allotted time.

Not improving vocabulary

Many candidates think that they have enough vocabulary in their store and so they don't need to improve it. They are thinking in the wrong direction. If you have a limited vocabulary then you won't understand many of the questions asked during the exam. This test covers diverse topics; so not knowing enough words can be a disaster. You must practice new words every day. When you come across a new word, don't just memorize it. Try to write it in a sentence so that you can easily recall the word later. You should learn the synonyms and antonyms. Using flashcards is a smart move toward learning new words. [图片]

Neglecting grammar

Though you won't have direct grammatical questions in this test, you must know the ins and outs of English grammar. The examiner will test your grammar skills when you answer the questions. You may end up giving wrong answers in the Reading section if you have poor grammatical knowledge. Before the exam, you should review the grammar rules from a good English grammar book.

Translating everything to the native language

Many people try to translate everything into their native language before answering any question. This process can be time-consuming and may lead to giving wrong answers. You must improve your English thinking skills so that you don't have to rely on translating.

Not practicing the listening section

You can get a lower score if you don't practice the listening section enough. You should listen to news, songs, and podcasts regularly before the exam to improve your listening skills. Remember that the accent can vary from person to person. You should be able to understand any accent. Instead of focusing on a few words you must look at the whole picture. That way you will find it easier to understand the context.

Giving random answers

As it's a multiple-choice test, many people tend to guess the answers, especially when there isn't much time left. But this strategy can lower your chances of getting the answer right. Instead of random guessing, you should use techniques like elimination strategies. If you have to guess, make an educated guess and not a random one. Look out for the main idea and focus on the purpose of the conversations.

Rushing into answers

Though there is a time limitation, you shouldn't rush into answers. You must take the time to answer and review them. Reviewing decreases the chance of giving wrong answers or missing out on answering any question.

Not properly reading instructions

No matter how many times you have done practice tests at home, you should read the questions carefully in the exam hall. Some questions ask you to write two answers, for example. So, if you don't read the instructions then you might miss out on answering a question properly.

Rushing through speaking and writing tests

In the TOEIC exam, the speaking and writing sections are given together. If you are sitting for the speaking test then don't rush to your answers. Take some time to understand the question and plan your answer. When answering questions in the writing section, focus on the opening, body, and closing of your content.

Be stressed before the exam

You shouldn't be stressed right before the exam. This will affect your performance and you will get a poor score. Try to sleep well the night before so that you have a clear head before you go to the exam hall. You should practice relaxing techniques to get rid of stress and anxiety. You can try doing yoga or meditation. Deep breathing exercises are also helpful. By knowing the common mistakes that people make when taking the TOEIC exam, you can increase your chance of getting a high score. By remembering these tips you can avoid simple mistakes in the TOEIC exam. Remember that there will be questions whose answers you may not know. But by avoiding these mistakes you can ensure that you answer the known questions correctly.
